OLITEF 2025: Financial Education Takes Center Stage in Brazilian Schools

In 2025, the Tesouro Direto Financial Education Olympiad (Olitef) established itself as one of the most important educational initiatives in Brazil.

Less than three months after registration opened, the program’s second edition exceeded all expectations, with 7,180 schools taking part.

That number already surpasses the total number of institutions involved in 2024, when 6,560 schools participated.

The initiative, aimed at students from 6th grade through the final year of high school at both public and private schools, is run by B3 (Brazil’s stock exchange) and the National Treasury Secretariat.

It is also supported by the Ministry of Education (MEC), the Central Bank, the National Union of Municipal Education Leaders (Undime), and the National Council of State Education Secretaries (Consed).

A Growing Program: Data and Growth

The sharp increase in participation shows how the program has gained strength. Compared with the same period last year, participation grew by more than 400%.

In June 2024, only 1,629 schools had registered, significantly fewer than the current total.

Among the participating institutions:

  • 87% are public schools;

  • 13% are private schools.

Olitef’s geographic coverage has also expanded, from 43% of municipalities in 2024 to 50% in 2025.

This progress indicates that the program has been reaching regions that were previously underserved by similar educational initiatives.

States with the most registered schools:

  • São Paulo: 1,086 institutions

  • Rio de Janeiro, Ceará, Minas Gerais, and Piauí: all with more than 500 registered schools

Regions with the most participants:

  • Northeast: 2,910 schools

  • Southeast: 2,328 schools

A Project for Social Transformation

According to National Treasury Secretary Rogério Ceron, Olitef should be seen as more than a competition.

It works as a tool for social transformation, helping young people develop a mindful attitude toward personal finance from an early age.

According to Ceron, financial education must be seen as a strategic pillar for the country’s development.

By incorporating concepts of responsible consumption, financial planning, and investing, the program helps prepare a generation that is better equipped for the challenges of today’s world.

An Ambitious Goal and Concrete Rewards

In 2025, Olitef set a goal of reaching 5 million students nationwide.

In addition to the traditional medals, financial rewards will be distributed to encourage students to put the knowledge gained during the competition into practice.

Approximately 150,000 students are expected to receive medals in recognition of their strong performance.

Top performers will also be awarded Tesouro Direto government bonds worth about $80, as an incentive to save and invest wisely.

Final Days to Register with Extra Benefits

Public schools that haven’t registered yet can take advantage of an additional perk: institutions that sign up by June 10 will have three times the chance of being drawn for the prizes offered in the 2025 edition.

Prizes for public schools:

  • 54 public schools will be drawn, two per state

  • Each winning school will receive an educational kit worth about $20,000

Kit options include:

  • Computer labs

  • Robotics labs

  • Science labs

  • Digital libraries with tablets

  • Air-conditioning units

The equipment will be chosen based on each institution’s needs, so the impact of the prize can be directed to specific areas of structural and teaching improvement.

Prizes for educators:

  • The principal and up to four teachers from each winning school will also benefit

  • Each will receive about $1,600 in Tesouro Direto government bonds

This recognition of education professionals is a direct acknowledgment of the dedication of the educators who guide students through preparing for and taking part in the competition.

Teaching Support for Teachers

To ensure the content is properly applied and understood, all participating teachers will receive complete teaching materials developed by UpMat Educacional.

The content was developed specifically to align with Brazil’s National Common Core Curriculum (BNCC) and offers a practical, accessible approach to financial education.

Topics covered in the materials include:

  • Financial planning and organization

  • Building personal and family budgets

  • Saving and basic investing

  • The risks of debt and using credit wisely

  • Applied financial math

  • Entrepreneurship education

  • Fundamentals of economics

This teaching support allows teachers to act not just as content facilitators but as agents of change within the school environment.

Financial Education: A Pillar of Sustainable Development

Financial education has gained increasing prominence in public policy in many countries, and Brazil is beginning to make important progress in this area.

According to recent research, adults who were exposed to financial topics during childhood and adolescence show greater decision-making ability and are less prone to debt.

Initiatives like Olitef help build a solid foundation for more responsible and sustainable financial behavior among the population.

In the long run, this helps reduce social inequality and increase banking and digital inclusion.

OLITEF: An Example Worth Replicating

Since its creation, the Tesouro Direto Financial Education Olympiad has stood out not only for its impressive numbers but also for the depth of its impact.

The project has become the largest financial education olympiad in Brazil and one of the most significant in the world.

With the 2025 edition, its reach has expanded, and the expectation is that in the coming years Olitef will serve as a model for other educational initiatives.

The olympiad’s success shows that strategic partnerships between government, the private sector, and schools can transform the educational reality of millions of Brazilians.

Conclusion: Education That Creates Opportunities

OLITEF 2025 is much more than a competition.

It’s an educational movement aimed at preparing citizens for the challenges of adult life, with a clear understanding of how to handle money, plan for the future, and make responsible decisions.

By encouraging schools to participate actively, rewarding student performance, and providing proper training for teachers, the program fulfills its role of promoting social transformation and contributing to the country’s economic development.

Schools that haven’t registered yet now have the chance to be part of this process.

The opportunity is there, and the benefits go far beyond the prizes. Taking part in Olitef is an important step toward a fairer, more informed, and better-prepared society.
